Remembering Vurnis Tyrone Kennedy
Our beloved, Vurnis Tyrone Kennedy, 70 of Elizabeth City, NC departed from this earthly life on Friday November 12, 2021 at Autumn Care of Portsmouth.
Life Celebration Service will take place on Friday November 19, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Mitchell Funeral Care and Cremations Chapel with Pastor J. Andre Turner, Officiating. A viewing will take place ONE HOUR prior to the service. Interment will follow at a later date in the Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.
He is a 1969 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and earned an associate's degree in photojournalism. He is a Vietnam Veteran who served as a gunner in the United States Army from 1971-1973. He founded a Vietnam Veterans of America chapter in Martinsburg, West Virginia where he mentored countless veterans through different programs, to help them better themselves and become productive citizens.
He is predeceased by his mother Lucy Kennedy, father, Burnis Lee Kennedy and brother Ronnie Kennedy. He is survived by a daughter, Leha Byrd, a sister Carolyn Kennedy-Hamm, a niece Kimberly Matthews (Milton Matthews), two nephews, Brandon Kennedy and Phillip Ware (Salathea) and a host of great nieces and nephews.
