Melanie Olivia Mathewson, 68, of 212 Ibis Way, Elizabeth City, died at home on Thursday, November 9, 2023. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Pelican Pointe Club House, 208 Winborne Loop, Elizabeth City, NC on Saturday, November 18, 2023. A Celebration of Life service will also be held in New York City on Saturday, December 9, at the Annunciation Church, 88 Convent Avenue, Harlem, NY. At the request of the deceased, her wishes were to be cremated.

Mrs. Mathewson was the daughter of the late Dorothy Lopez and Harrison Smith. Her sunset is preceded by her late husband Mr. John Mathewson and her eldest son, Justin Smith. Survivors include her son, Garrison Mathewson of the home; one stepdaughter, Renée Mathewson of Atlanta, GA; one stepson, Kenneth Mathewson of New York, N.Y.; one grandson Terrance Justin Mathewson of Atlanta, Ga; and two very special family friends Bianca Chancy and Justine Verzo of New York, NY, whom Melanie viewed as daughters; Bandit and Sasha, her beloved fur babies; and a host of long-time friends.
