Marvin Moore Obituary

"Currents of Purpose: A Life Well Lived"

Colossians 3:22-24 (AMP): 22 Servants, in everything obey those who are your masters on earth, not only with external service, as those who merely please people, but with sincerity of heart because of your fear of the Lord. 23 Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [greatest] reward. It is the Lord Christ whom you [actually] serve.

A Time to Be Born
On January 4th, 1955, a new light entered the world with the birth of Marvin Lee Moore in Elizabeth City, NC. Known as "Ma Lee" to some and "Hollywood" to many, he was born to the late Willie James and Clennie Hurdle Moore, one of three boys in a family of nine siblings. From the start, he brought an abundance of joy, strength, and humor to his loved ones.

A Time to Cast
Marvin had a lifelong passion for fishing, a joy he shared deeply with his late wife, Mona. He loved casting his line from the pier, eagerly sharing this love with his children, grandchildren, and other family members. Always willing to teach and share his knowledge, he found immense satisfaction in helping others experience the thrill of the catch. Spots and croakers were his favorite targets, and his love for seafood extended beyond the thrill of the chase to savoring the delicious bounty of the sea. But the true reward, for Marvin, always lay in the tranquility of the water and the camaraderie of those around him.

Beyond fishing, Marvin was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Duke Blue Devils and the Dallas Cowboys with unwavering enthusiasm. He and Mona shared a playful rivalry, with Mona passionately supporting her alma mater, UNC Chapel Hill. A true jack of all trades, Marvin was a master bricklayer and a skilled general contractor for FEMA, receiving various accolades and awards, including recognition from former Governor Jim Hunt. He also worked as a security guard at various events in the Durham/Chapel Hill area, a role that allowed him to witness legendary college plays and enjoy performances by his favorite musical artists – memories he treasured. But above all, Marvin will be remembered for his generous and caring spirit, always ready with a joke and a warm smile. He had a knack for making everyone feel like family, calling them "cuz." And who could forget those legendary cookouts? Marvin was the master of the grill and the fish fryer, bringing family together with delicious food and warm fellowship. His presence brought laughter and light to those around him, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him. You will never meet another..."Hollywood."

A Time to Gather
Marvin was a cherished husband to Mona, who preceded him in death in March of this year. Their 34-year marriage, a testament to their enduring love, was a bond that transcended even Mona's passing. After her death, Marvin transitioned to a memory care facility, where his compassionate spirit continued to shine. He had embraced his role as a loving and supportive husband with unwavering dedication, serving as her primary caretaker until her final days. He truly embodied the vows "in sickness and in health, till death do us part." Even within the memory care facility, Marvin's caretaking spirit continued to shine as he extended kindness to other patients, assisting them and ensuring their well being. His selfless love and compassionate heart shone brightly, even as he himself faced illness and adversity.

Marvin's love extended to his three children: Kentrial Harvey (Qiana) of Elizabeth City, NC; Jacqueline Hill (Chris) of Aydlett, NC; and Angela Williams (Elmer) of Elizabeth City, NC. He was a devoted father, his love for his family undeniable. He delighted in sharing stories about his ten grandchildren: Dylik, KJ, Rhyan, Jahanezea, Aaron, Aariah, Antonio, Keyshawn, Reign, and Aryis, as well as his three great- grandchildren: Lavayah, Kason, and Daveon. His pride in their accomplishments was evident to all. Marvin was also a beloved brother to six sisters, Claudette Queen, Alexis Hinton (Leroy), Beverly Mallory (Norman), Irene White, Janice Daye, and the late Sharon Figgs; and two brothers, Bishop James Moore (Daisy), and Daryel Moore (Vickie). He was a loyal friend to many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him, from Elizabeth City to Durham/Chapel Hill to Kinston, NC. Marvin's joyful spirit, his playful jokes, and his humorous nature filled every room he entered. He truly never met a stranger, his warmth and kindness touching the lives of everyone he encountered. Marvin embodied- John 15:13: " No one has greater love [nor stronger commitment] than to lay down his own life for his friends.”

A Time to Return
On the evening of Thursday, October 31st, around 5:30 PM, Marvin peacefully cast off on his final journey, as God granted him eternal peace and rest. It was as if he had finished a full day's work, his tasks complete, his spirit ready to embark on a new adventure. 2 Timothy 4:7: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

In keeping with Marvin’s deep connection to the water, his final resting place will be the Pasquotank River where his spirit will forever be
at peace- “Drifting on a Memory”....
