Remembering Teenie
The sun shone brightly on February 6, 1925, when Frances Elizabeth Barcliff was born. Frances was the sixth of nine children to the late William Coe Barcliff and Martha Elizabeth - all from Chapanoke, North Carolina. She was affectionately called “Teenie Sis,” mom, grandma, or Aunt “Lubeth” by close family and Miss Elizabeth to most. Frances lived in Chapanoke for 95 of her 97 years; The last two years, she resided in Olney, Maryland with her son and and his family until her passing. God dispatched His angels on Monday, December 12, 2022 and spirited her into His bosom where He welcomed her with open arms.
Frances attended public school in Chapanoke, reaching the sixth grade at Fork Bridge School. She gave her life to the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age; becoming a woman of faith and a long-time member of Porter’s Chapel Church AME Zion Church. She took her walk with God very seriously, as she was a daily bible reader and constant prayer warrior. She attended several small group Bible study classes in her attempt to better understand the word of God and remain a faithful Christian. Frances was very active in her church and held the position of Church Treasurer for many years. Frances also accompanied her husband Luther David Turner, Jr. (“LD”) to his church atGalatia Missionary Baptist Church in New Hope, where she became an active member of their choir shortly following his death.
Frances was employed at IXL and was a dedicated employee for many years until the company began to downsize, and many like her were forced to retire. Frances loved to keep busy. She would often be seen working in her yard pulling weeds from her flower garden, in the cemetery behind the church clearing the family plot, or nursing family members and friends during their illnesses.
Upon marring LD on December 31, 1947, she was a life-long and dutiful wife, who nurtured her husband until he transitioned from this life in April 2012.
In addition to her husband, LD, Frances was proceeded in death by her siblings: Marion Gramby, Mary B Riddick, Alverta Evans, Sherman Barcliff, Harry Barcliff, William CalibrewBarcliff, Roosevelt Barcliff, and Augustus Barcliff; as well as byone granddaughter, Sherri West.
Frances leaves to cherish her memories: her son, Calvin, and daughter-in-law Jacqueline, Olney, MD; grandchildren, Candice Douglas (Dwaine), Spring Lake, NC; Nikki Turner, Olney, MD,Richard Barkley, Baltimore, MD, and Edward Barkley, Las Vegas, NV. She also leaves her nine great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Clottie and Alberta Barcliff, and host of nieces, nephews and friends.
