Dorothy "Dot" Freshwater Simpson’s Life Story

Dorothy "Dot" Freshwater Simpson departed from this temporal life, on January 1, 2021 at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center to receive her Eternal Reward. She was born to the late Rev. Theodore Freshwater and the late Mariah Lightfoot Eason Freshwater on March 27, 1933 in Elizabeth City, NC. She was the youngest of 22 children. She was preceded in death by her daughter Sgt. Jeanette Roberson Brazzle.

She was known as: as Ma Dot, grandma Dot or aunt Dot, well up until she took her last breath. "Ma Dot" leaves many to carry on her legacy of loving kindness and compassion for others. She was a hard working and loving woman, with a beautiful smile, who made many sacrifices for her children, grandchildren and other children throughout the community.

"Ma Dot’s” Christian journey began at a very young age where she accepted Christ. She was baptized and became a member of the St. Stephen's Missionary Baptist church where she ushered for over 40 years.

She is survived by her sons: Deacon James W. Roberson Jr. also known as Robert Jr. (Marilyn), Brick, NJ., Anthony Ray Hassell and Anthony Roberson both of Elizabeth City, NC. Grandchildren: Terrence Roberson also known as PeeWee (Mary), Elizabeth City, NC, Annette Roberson (Anton), Elizabeth City, NC, Evangelist Evette Roberson- Turner (William), Elizabeth City, NC, Brandon Roberson, Clayton, DE, Lakesha Brazzle (Willis), Elizabeth City, NC, and Brittany Roberson, Brick, NJ. Two God sons Ronnie Riddick (Judy) and Charles Jernigan. Two God daughter's Juanita Jones (Charlie) and Carol Lloyd. A sister-like niece Rosa Freshwater Overton.

“Ma Dot” was blessed with a host of great grandchildren, great- great grandchildren, special nieces, nephews and cousins who showed their love for her over and over again.She will be missed by all!

“Ma Dot’s” work is done, she has finished the course and has taken her flight in the wait of the promise of the RESURRECTION.

But, her legacy lives on. 

Life Celebration Services will take place on Sunday January 10, 2021 at 1:00 pm at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Ricky L. Banks, officiating. A viewing will take place one hour prior to the service. She will be laid to rest in the West Lawn Cemetery. 

We are following all COVID-19 restrictions and the service will be limited in attendance as mask/face coverings will be required upon entry. The service will be live-streamed directly from our website to our Facebook Social Media page. If you have been sick and/or exposed to someone sick, we ask respectfully that you’d refrain from attending in person and contribute your love to the family via live-stream and on-line condolences.
