Mertie Luvenia (Liverman) Ruttlen

Mertie Luvenia Liverman Ruttlen

was born on August 30, 1932 to the late Belle Gibbs Liverman and Julius McCoy Liverman. Mertie, affectionately known as "Aunt Winnie" or "Aunt Dot" was educated in the Pasquotank School System. She later relocated to Mount Vernon, New York where she met and married her late husband, James Ruttlen. While in New York, she worked as a housekeeper for several years and attended Mount Calvary CME Church.

Mertie was preceded in death by her husband, James; a special partner and friend, Johnny "Unc" Percy; three sisters, Gracie Cherry, Doris Winfield and Dora Watford; and one brother, Alfred Liverman. 

She leaves to cherish her memories; one brother, Thomas Liverman of Greensboro, NC; one special friend, Annie Mary Tucker of Mount Vernon, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

"Aunt Winnie" transferred her address from 901 S. Halstead Blvd to her heavenly home, peacefully on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Concordia Health and Rehabilitation, Elizabeth City, NC. She wishes that you would weep not for her, as the angels in heaven have signed her name. Her life will be celebrated on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Care and Cremations.

Heaven Awaits
I've traveled this long road of life. I've seen happiness; I've seen strife.
I've served God from place to place, Telling the story, saved by grace.
Many miles I have traveled here, Some sad, some filled with cheer,
But my weary soul will feel its best When one day it enters Heaven's rest.
I must serve the Lord here below Until He says, "It's time to go."
I must go about, trying to do good, Pleasing God the way I should.
Going home will really be great, But I should work here while I wait.
Still I am yearning more and more To make my trip to that golden shore.
